Just got back from Bob Kegan’s and Lisa Lahey’s Immunity to Change workshop! It was a great experience and very powerful work. They make it seems so easy but I have to remember that Bob Kegan has been doing the research on adult development for 30 years.
In any case, the process of uncovering the big assumptions that keep us stuck with one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake is simple but takes your breath away it’s so powerful. Those of us in the workshop found out how to peel away our resistance to change one assumption at a time. While many of us are aware of some of our beliefs and some of our assumptions, one thing that makes the immunity to change experience so powerful is to finally see the assumptions that hold us not just the assumptions that we hold.
Assumptions that hold us are often ones that simply are a part of our identity. This process directly confronts those things we badly want to change or important goals we have that we never seem to accomplish.
